From the Desk of Lee VerBerkmoes, Fort Wilkins Historic State Park Supervisor Summer is in full swing now at Fort Wilkins. All of our staff has returned and is busy at work keeping the park operating. Several restoration projects have been started in the Fort also. Like migrating birds, visitors are now starting to show up in Copper Harbor and at the park. So far park use is comparable to last year, and this is encouraging, considering the state of Michigan's economy and the price of gasoline. We have more than 40 evening programs scheduled this summer and six special events planned, with the Memorial Day service having taken place already. These programs are listed in this newsletter. We are looking forward to a busy summer with lots going on and hopefully some nice weather. As always the park staff and visitors are grateful to the FWNHA for their generous support of our evening programs and special events. These activities enrich our visitor's experiences here and hopefully they leave here with a better understanding of our unique historical and natural resources. This year due to state budget cuts History Division was unable to fund the role playing program and the FWNHA generously stepped forward and picked up the funding for this very important program. Your involvement and support of the FWNHA is very much appreciated.
